Brackenbury HouseBrackenbury House is located within the suburbs of the City of Preston. It is within 10 minutes walking distance of special schools which cater for young people with slight to moderate learning difficulties. The property is located next to a large park and is only a short distance away from a ten pin bowling alley, a leisure centre and the local GP, dentist and opticians. Features The accommodation at Brackenbury House is of a high decorative standard which is conducive to maintaining a friendly, nurturing and homely atmosphere. As with all ongoing projects in the home, we believe in involving the young people here as much as possible in respect to the maintenance and decor of the property. The rationale behind this is to make this home their home, with consideration to our residents' needs for both companionship and privacy. The communal lounges are both aesthetically pleasing and comfortable and are equipped with a television, video and a DVD player. Weather permitting, residents can relax on a decked seating area set within a small terraced garden. At the rear of the property is a large double garage which functions as the residents' recreation room. Bedrooms Bedrooms are of single occupancy, all have comfortable furnishings. All rooms have a portable colour television and video combined. Each young person is able to personalise their own space with such things as posters, pictures and personal possessions. Residents can also choose the colour of their rooms once they have settled in. Care Services Brackenbury House caters for 4 males between the ages of 10 and 18 who have slight to moderate learning difficulties and who may also be displaying behavioural problems. The atmosphere that we aim to create and uphold in the home is one of a caring, nurturing and happy nature. We promote an atmosphere in which care is given on an individual basis and in a non-institutionalised setting. We believe that each young person needs a sense of routine, consistency and clearly identified boundaries. This is tempered with recognition of the need to encourage individuality and personal growth. To this end we have a staff team who will individually tailor Internal Placement Plans (IPP's) that will encourage growth and freedom, within the parameters of a shared living environment. Ultimately we desire that each young person will develop the ability to function in a positive way within his wider environment. We aim to empower young people to work towards the healing of past hurts. We proactively encourage the instalment of personal pride and self esteem in order to deal effectively with issues that will affect their future. On commencement, all staff have a six-week induction programme as outlined in the National Minimum Standards 2002. Further training, which is conducted in house, is on a rolling 12 month programme. This training is undertaken by ALL the staff at Brackenbury House. Training to NVQ Level 3+ is also available in-house through an external agent and internal assessors. This is directly linked to Personal Development Plans. Admissions Procedure Before we can invite someone to stay at Brackenbury House, we obviously need to ascertain their background, previous experiences and immediate needs. In order for us to process this information quickly, we request that details are supplied to us using our official referral form. After initial contact, we would be pleased for the young person, their family and their social worker to visit us to assess our facilities and suitability. Admission is initially on a 3 month trial basis. This enables us to determine the effectiveness of our work with the young person and safeguards against disrupting the dynamics of our existing group.
